Sikhs to be counted as a separate ethnic group in USA’s 2020 census

SAN DIEGO, California—In the 2020 census to be conducted in the United States of America, the Sikhs will be counted as a separate ethnic group. US Census Deputy Director Ron Jarmin has said that it’s clear that a separate code is needed to ensure an accurate count of Sikhs in the United States, recognizing a unique identity.

San Diego based Sikh Society’s president Baljeet Singh said that this was the result of efforts made by the Sikh community in the past.

Describing the move as a milestone, the United Sikhs said this would be the first time the minority group would be counted and coded in the decennial US Census.

A delegation of the United Sikhs has had several meetings with the US Census in the recent past with the last one being in San Diego on January 6.

As per an estimate, around one million Sikhs are currently living in United States of America.

  1. Ridiculous decision. Sikhs are not special. What about hindu, christian, muslim ethnicity. Where does this stupidity end. Ethnicity got nothing to do with religion.
