SALDEF To Work with Major US Television Networks to Advance Diversity

SALDEF Meets with Major Television Networks
National Coalition Works with Media Executives to Advance Diversity

WASHINGTON DC, USA—Over the last month, SALDEF met with the Presidents of the three major television networks — ABC, CBS, and NBC, to continue the organizations’ mutual interest to advance diversity in broadcast television. The meetings were the latest in a series of high-level discussions with the television networks as part of SALDEF’s work with the Asian Pacific American Media Coalition (APAMC).

“Every year SALDEF meets with network executive to create a pathway for Sikhs to increase our presence and be represented on screen and behind the camera,” said SALDEF Board Chair Kavneet Singh.  “This year marks continued progress in the relationship with Lily Singh being named a late-night host, to Jiwandeep Kohli competing on the Great American Baking Show, and Amandeep Singh competing on Holey Moley,  but there continues to be significant work to be done. We will continue to work to foster talent and develop a pipeline for Sikh American creatives, as we forge forward with strengthening relationships in entertainment, to increase diverse representation.”

The meetings took place as part of agreements with the networks to increase diversity both in front of the cameras and behind the scenes. Attendees at the meetings included executives in charge of content, script development, communications, talent development, and diversity and inclusion. SALDEF and other attendees discussed opportunities to further advance the goals of the coalition. Their focus included: expanding the partnership to include talent development; identifying pipelines for actors and directors, and conducting outreach to community talent.

APAMC members include the Asian American Justice Center, East West Players, Japanese American Citizens League, Media Action Network for Asian Americans, National Federation of Filipino American Associations, and OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates.
