Punjab assembly requests Akal Takht to allow Sikh women to perform Kirtan inside Sri Harmandir Sahib

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—In a resolution passed in the Punjab assembly today, Sri Akal Takht Sahib has been requested that Sikh women should be allowed to perform Kirtan inside the sanctum sanctorum Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar.

The move is being seen as a big development for Indian, especially Punjabi society. The resolution passed by the Punjab assembly states that Guru Nanak Sahib dreamed of creating a society free from discrimination on the basis of caste, creed and gender.

“There is no example of discrimination against women in the Sikh history and women. But it is a matter of grief that women are not allowed to perform kirtan in Sri Harmandir Sahib,” reads the resolution.

In this specially called session, the Punjab assembly has requested the Akal Takht Jathedar and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee to abolish this practice which is against the Sikh philosophy and allow Sikh women to do Kirtan in Sri Harmandir Sahib.
