:dateline:A report published in the mainstream Indian vernacular The Tribune reveals that the Congress led Punjab government has recommended remission of 15 police cops who are currently languishing in the Indian jails for committing crimes like extra-judicial killings, kidnapping and fake encounters during the late 1980s and early 1990s in Punjab.
It is learnt that the list of these 15 cops includes an SP, four DSPs, eight inspectors, a Sub-Inspector and an ASI.
The government had asked for the remission of their sentence on grounds of old age and ill-health. The oldest among them is 83 years old and the youngest 63. Once decorated officers, one of them was awarded the Presidents Police Medal. Eight of the convicts are serving life terms. The rest are out on bail. Most of them were lodged in Central Jail, Patiala, notes The Tribune.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that the BJP led Union government of India has expressed interest in remitting these cops and has sought more information on the convicts.
