Family members of Beant “Singh” announces to challenge commutation of Rajoanas death sentence in Supreme Court

:dateline:Soon after the Indian governments announcement to commute death sentence of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana to life imprisonment, the family members of the former Punjab CM Beant Singh have announced to challenge Union governments decision in the Supreme Court. Notably, Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana was addressed death sentence in Beant Singh assassination case in July-2007.

MLA Gurkirat Singh Kotli, who is grandson of Beant Singh, told the media that they will challenge the Centre’s decision in Supreme Court.

He alleged that the Centre has taken this decision as Rajoana had appealed for votes for the Bharatiya Janata Party and its ally Shiromani Akali Dal during the last parliamentary elections. Rajoanas sister Kamaldeep Kaur openly supports Shiromani Akali Dal from her social media accounts, she added.

We are taking legal opinion on what grounds it will be challenged. One of the main grounds for challenging the Centre’s decision will be that Rajoana himself had never apologized and had never moved any mercy petition for commuting his death sentence, he said.
