:dateline:Passing a straight forward gesture of defending the Police cops indulged in extra-judicially killing the Sikh youths, the Punjab governor VP Singh Badnore pardoned four police cops on June 20. The quartet was serving life sentence for extra-judicially murdering a Sikh youth named Harjit Singh during the intervening night of October 12 and 13 in 1993.
Available information reveals that these Police cops were held guilty and sentenced to life by the Special CBI Court of Patiala on 01-12-2014. Three out of these four police cops namely Rajiv Kumar Singh (SP), Brij Lal Verma (Inspector) and Onkar Singh (Constable) belonged to Uttar Pradesh police while the rest one Harinder Singh was serving as an Inspector in the Punjab police.
Meanwhile, an upsurge is being observed among the Punjab politicians and common masses as the information about this pardon became public today.
Khalra Mission Organizations chief Bibi Paramjit Kaur Khalra, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and PEP head Sukhpal Khaira have termed the move as a mockery of the judicial system.
I condemn chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh for recommending the pardon of four police personnel who abducted and killed an innocent Sikh youth in 1993 to secure out of turn promotions. This is unacceptable and the SAD will fight tooth and nail to get this order overturned. We stand in solidarity with the family of Harjit Singh of Saharan Majra village in Ludhiana, who was abducted and killed by the four cops, including three of Uttar Pradesh. I assure the aggrieved family which fought for 20 years to get justice that their struggle will not go in vain. The SAD will now take up their fight on behalf of the Sikh community and ensure justice is delivered, Sukhbir Badal wrote from his Facebook wall.
PEP head Sukhpal Khaira today addressed a press conference along with the family members of victim Sikh youth Harjit Singh. During this conference, Sukhpal Khaira informed that the pardoned quartet cops were released on June 19.
Sukhpal Khaira also raked up the issue of political Sikh prisoners like Prof. Devender Pal Singh Bhullar, Bhai Gurdeep Singh Khera etc. who have been languishing in the Indian jails from more than two decades.
