To carry the whole world across, Guru Ram Das of the Sodhi dynasty has now been blessed with the greatness (of Guruship). -Bhatt Balya, Guru Granth Sahib, 1406

Message: Sodhi is a caste from the Punjab region – a subdivision of the Khatri caste. Guru Ram Das was born as Bhai Jetha into a Sodhi Khatri family. Bhai Jetha was spiritually inclined from an early age and spent time in the company of devout people. One day, he followed a party of Sikhs who were on their way to Goindwal to pay homage to Guru Amar Das. He was so inspired by the Guru that he chose to stay on and serve the Guru with devotion and humility as his disciple.

Although he came from a poor and humble background, through his devotion and love to the Divine, he rose over the years to become the next Guru after the passing away of Guru Amar Das.

Etymology: From Punjabi soḍhee (one of the sub-castes of Kashtryas).
