Court Rejects Bail Plea of Ex-SSP Charanjit Sharma

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—A Court of Faridkot based additional sessions judge Harpal Singh today rejected the bail plea of Ex-SSP Moga Charanjit Sharma. Notably, Charanjit Sharma had moved a plea in the session court of Faridkot on February 25 seeking bail from the Court till the trial of this case.

On March 1, the public prosecution on behalf of SIT had told the Court that there were reasonable apprehensions that Sharma’s release on bail could lead to witnesses being influenced or complainant being threatened.

However, defense counsels for Sharma had claimed that there was no substantial evidence so far and releasing him was not going to impede the SIT investigation. “He is a heart patient who has undergone two angioplasty surgeries so he deserves to be released on bail,” said defense counsels.

After hearing arguments of prosecution and defense counsels, the Court had reserved its verdict which was pronounced today.

Meanwhile, the family members of Charanjit Sharma have said that they will challenge the Faridkot Court’s verdict in the Punjab & Haryana High Court.
