Behbal Klan Tragedy: High Court Grants Conditional Anticipatory Bail to Inspector Pardeep Singh

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The Punjab & Haryana High Court bench headed by Justice Raminder Jain on February 13 granted conditional anticipatory bail to Inspector Pardeep Singh (the then SHO) who is accused of being involved in opening an unprovoked firing on the peacefully protesting Sikhs at Behbal Klan on October 14, 2015. Notably, two Sikh youths namely Krishan Bhagwan Singh and Gurjit Singh had attained martyrdom while several others were left injured in this firing.

In his anticipatory bail plea, Inspector Pardeep Singh claimed before the High Court that his name was included in the FIR after recording the statement of witness Beant Singh by the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission. He told the Court that Beant Singh didn’t accuse him earlier while getting his version recorded before the Justice Zora Singh Commission and Justice Markandey Katju Commission.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the Court has issued notice to the Punjab government seeking reply on the petition and granted conditional interim bail to Inspector Pardeep Singh while deferring next hearing onto May 21.
