I have become the master of the village (the body, because I) have reined the five rivals in. -Guru Arjun Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 73

Message: Guru Arjun Sahib gives us a very positive message, that he has become the master of the village – the body – and has reined in the five evil passions: lust, wrath, greed, avarice, worldly attachments, and egoism. Guru Sahib calls these five vices ‘rivals’. Though it is very difficult in this world for us to fully control the five destructive emotions, we should not give up our efforts to purify our mind.

Etymology: From Sanskrit piṅd (body)Punjabi piňd (village).
