Sikh Legislator Becomes Parliamentary Secretary in Pakistani Punjab Assembly; SGPC Congratulates

LAHORE, Punjab—For the first time in the history of West Punjab (Pakistan), the state assembly on January 30 decided to appoint a Sikh legislator named Mahinder Pal Singh as a Parliamentary Secretary. It is learnt that an official statement in this concern will be released within few days.

This exemplary move by the West Punjab government is a gesture of communal harmony and religious amiability in the Islamic State of Pakistan.

Sharing the development with media, Sardar Mahinder Pal Singh stated that the minorities are enjoying full freedom in Pakistan. He added that the Pakistan government has been continuously assigning the key responsibilities to the Sikhs and Hindus by appointing them on prominent positions. “On January 12, the provincial government had appointed a Sikh as a Public Relations Officer to the Governor. Similarly, a Hindu woman was appointed as a civil judge in Sindh,” he said.

Meanwhile, the SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal has congratulated Sardar Mahinder Pal Singh on his selection as a Parliamentary Secretary in the Western Punjab’s assembly. He has said that the appointment of Sardar Mahinder Pal Singh as a Parliamentary Secretary holds great importance at present as he will act as a bridge between Sikhs of two countries in the 550th birth anniversary celebrations.

It is noteworthy here that Sardar Mahinder Pal Singh was elected MPA on a reserved seat for minorities on a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf ticket from Multan.
