1984 Sikh Genocide Survivors Meet PM Modi Seeking Security; Demand Daily Trial of Rest Cases

NEW DELHI, India—The key witnesses of 1984 Sikh genocide Bibi Jagdish Kaur, Bibi Nirpreet Kaur and Jagsher Singh met the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 2 seeking enhanced security for them and their family members as the former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar and his accomplices might attack them in revenge. Notably, the testimonies of the trio victims have landed Sajjan Kumar in jail for the entire life.

It is learnt that this meeting was facilitated by the Shiromani Akali Dal leaders and they were also accompanying the genocide victims on this occasion. SAD president Sukhbir Badal, SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal, Parliamentarians Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Balwinder Singh Bhoondarh and Prem Singh Chandumajra, DSGMC leaders Manjit Singh GK and Manjinder Singh Sirsa etc. were present on this occasion.

During this half-an-hour long meeting at Parliament House, the Indian PM Narendra Modi highly hailed the bravery and courage of the trio victims of fighting a more than three decades long legal fight against the 1984 Sikh genocide perpetrators. He promised them to provide more security for the protection of their wards.

The survivors also demanded daily trial in all the remaining cases of the 1984 Sikh genocide, besides the reopening of the case against Congress veteran Kamal Nath, now the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. “We told the PM that our actual struggle has begun only now. Our lives are at greater risk today than ever before because Sajjan Kumar is in jail and should anything happen to us, he can always say he is in jail and doesn’t know anything. We sought enhanced security and the PM promised to look into that,” Bibi Nirpreet Kaur told the media.

“The key question is of our lives and the safety of our children. Witnesses have been killed in the past and we fear for the lives of our kin. We told the PM our concern and also sought rehabilitation of other survivors,” Bibi Jagdish Kaur said.
