haivar gaivar neje vaaje. lasakar neb khavaasee paaje. bin jag-dees jhoo?he divaaje.
Horses, elephants, lances, bands, armies, deputies, royal attendants and other ostentatious undertakings – without the Naam of the Divine are useless displays. Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 225
Message: While there is nothing wrong to dress well and look good, we must caution against being ostentatious. We are but His creatures; the Divine has made us to perfection.
However, we are never satisfied and feel the need to outwardly exhibit our wealth to impress people that we are the best. We forget what is more important, i.e., the remembrance of the Naam. This verse reminds us to remain satisfied with what the Divine has given us and to remain humble and simple in our ways.
Etymology: Blend of Sanskrit gaj? Pali/Prakritgaya (elephant) + var (a suffix, meaningsupreme, excellent, fine, best), hence best of elephants or simply elephants.
