Bargari Agitation Likely to Conclude on December 9

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The Sarbat Khalsa appointed Jathedars have announced to end Bargari agitation. Bhai Dhian Singh Mand made an announcement in this concern on December 6 at Bargari.

However, Bhai Baljit Singh Daduwal told the press that while Bhai Dhian Singh Mand is considering concluding the morcha, it will only happen if the Government stays true to its promises. “We will end the morcha on the 9th only if the Government shows that it is really going to stand true to its words,” he said.

Interacting with media on December 6, Bhai Dhian Singh Mand said that the Punjab government had accepted most of their demands and a public announcement would be made on December 9. Meanwhile, some Panthik groups have questioned the intent behind concluding the morcha and what demands have been met, if any.

The Punjab Government has announced that it will release Sikh political prisoners to mark Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s 550th Gurpurab later this year.

Sources have informed that the Punjab cabinet minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa and a chief of Jalandhar based cult head played a prominent role in convincing the Takht Jathedars to end the Bargari agitation.

Bargari morcha is nearing its 200th day. Bhai Dhian Singh Mand and other Sarbat Khalsa appointed Jathedars announced to hold a peaceful agitation to seek the following demands –

  1. The release of Sikh political prisoners languishing in jails. Both Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa and Bapu Surat Singh renewed this long-standing demand of the Panth.
  2. The arrest of culprits who caused sacrilege at Burj Jawahar Singhwala
  3. The arrest of cops who opened fire on peacefully protesting Sikh sangat at Kotkapura
