The whole creation is dwelling with happiness such a benevolent rule (of mildness and peace) has been established. Guru Arjun Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 74
Message: The very first emotion that the mention of the kings and rulers of the yore aroused in the minds of the subjects was fear. One never knew what a king will order or do to his subjects when aroused due to any reason, whim or fancy. Their harshness and cruelty were unpredictable. The masses always yearned for an ideal and compassionate rule: A rule which does justice to all, is compassionate and benevolent, strong enough to protect the ruled from external and internal turmoil, welfare oriented, providing direction and facilities for mental and spiritual advancement, maintaining direction, encouraging love and amity, believes in equality and human rights. This is a very tall order and only a few rulers blessed by the Divine Himself may fulfil these expectations.
The followers of Gurus saw many semblances of the ideal ruler in the Gurus. Compassion and benevolence are greatly prominent in Guru Ram Dass dealings with the devotees. What a great blessing it could be for the humanity if someone like Guru Ram Das was to rule over them!
Etymology: Combination of halemee (mildness and peace) + raaj (rule).
