The Guru (Guru Ram Das) has established the rule of the Divine in the city of Ramdaspur (Amritsar). Guru Arjun Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 817
Message: During the period of Guru Arjun Sahib (1563-1606), Ramdaspur (currently, Amritsar, Punjab) was a great place for the inhabitants of all faiths. In this verse, Guru Arjun Sahib is in praise of the city and giving the credit of its planning, system and welfare to his predecessor and father, Guru Ram Das. The reference to the rule of King Ram is to highlight the ideal and virtuous character of the way the affairs of Ramdaspur were managed by Guru Ram Das: Society was run by the principles of truth, virtue and morality. People upheld righteousness in their actions. Everyone had equal rights and an easy access to fair justice. There was respect for all and no coercion or oppression.
As a natural consequence, such an ideal system had both temporal prosperity and spiritual happiness. This is the state that Gurbani is continually imploring us to build, within and without, wherever we live.
Notes: You may want to watch Ram Rajya, a1943Hindi historical film, which gained significance on account of its title, Ram Rajya(Rule of Rama).
Etymology: Combination of raam (the son of King Dasharath and an ideal king in Hinduism) + raaj (rule).
