A farmer works on his farm heartily and longs for (a good crop). He yokes the plough and endeavours (works the fields and wishes in his mind), My son and daughter may eat well. -Guru Ram Das, Guru Granth Sahib, 166
Message: No pain, no gain
Despite tedious manual labour, the promise of providing comforts for his loved ones keeps the farmer toiling under the hot sun.
Similarly, in our daily lives, we work with a desire or expectation in mind just like a farmer who ploughs the land to support his family. The Guru says that while engaged in our daily duties with family, relatives, friends and society, we need to be mindful that we accomplish our mission with honest and hard work.
Only then can we enjoy the fruits of our honest labour with our dear ones. It can be as simple as feeding our families or simply enjoying the simple pleasures of life.
Etymology: From Sanskritkrishaa?(ploughing).
