In the household where there is plenty (of wealth), there is anxiety (of losing it). In the household where it is little, one wanders (in search for more). -Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 1019
Message: Valuable possessions or wealth alone cannot give us peace of mind. Those who are rich fear that they might lose their riches and material possessions at some point in the future.
It is, of course, acknowledged that, quite often, we do have real financial difficulties – when we do not have enough funds to meet genuine needs. In such cases, we need to work hard and seek blessings of the Divine to meet our needs. However, it is important we do not concentrate on material possessions alone. Focus on living a spiritual life as explained in Gurbani.
This will help in leading a more fulfilled and contented lifestyle. Such a lifestyle is likely to remove our excessive focus on materialism and lead to a state of mind that is more peaceful and free of worry.
Everything is temporary. If things are going good, enjoy them because they won’t last forever. Bad things don’t last forever either, so don’t worry. -Anonymous
