Gurbani Word Of The Day: sarab Sookh

ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖ (sarab sookh)

Meaning: noun: All the pleasures or joys.

Quote:

andin raam ke gu kaheeai.
sagal padaarath  sarab sookh sidhi   man baachhat phal laheeai.
(Come let’s) utter the attributes of the all-pervading Lord (and by doing so) obtain all the treasures, all the pleasures, successes and the fruits of our mind’s desires. -Guru Arjun Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 1206

Message: The quote is asking us to focus on the attributes of the all-pervasive Almighty. If we introspect ourselves and are honest, we will realise that we are in bondage to lust, excessive desires, greed, falsehood and slander. We are ‘intoxicated’ with attachment to our material possessions and egotism

We want to be better people, have a life of joy, peace and inner tranquility, but these remain aspirations only because of slavery to different vices. Our inner being seeks divine qualities, but they cannot be achieved until we make a conscious effort to overcome our negative tendencies and replace them with positive ones.

This can only be done if we keep our mind focused on the Divine. When our mind is consciously remembering the Divine and is focused on achieving divineness, no oxygen is given to our vices, and their grip over us becomes less and less powerful. The spiritual joy and bliss ensue.

Etymology: Combination of sarab (all) + sookh (pleasures, joys, happiness) from Sanskrit sukh (pleasant, easy, comfort, happiness) → Pali sukh (pleasant) → Prakrit sukkh (happiness).
