I have no other (support) than the Divine.
O merchant friend! The Divine is found in the sanctuary of the Guru, It is obtained by great fortune. -Guru Ram Das Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 81

Message: In this life that we are leading, who or what is our support? How many of us have given a thought to this question? Can we truly depend on ourselves to get through life?

Our Gurus remind us that there is only one universal Creator. He is our ultimate support and protector. The first step, towards understanding the role of the Divine, is to know this. He is the One who provides us with good fortune and also protection from the woes of the world.

He is all pervading in His creation and hence a spiritual presence within us. He is our constant companion and without this consciousness, we will wander around without an anchor for stability. He is the One who brought us here and He is the One we ultimately return to.

Such a praiseworthy Divine could be realised by seeking and following the teachings of the Guru. It is the guidance of the Guru, which when internalized, will keep us reminded of the Divine presence at all times.

Etymology: From Sanskrit sharaṇ (protection, shelter, home) → Pali/Prakrit saraṇ → Punjabi saraṇ.
