The ten-headed (Ravan), who brought Sita with the beat of his tambourine, weeps when he loses his Lanka. -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 954
Message: This quote points to Ravan, the mighty and powerful king of Lanka. He had a quarrel with Sri Rama, the exiled king of Ayodhya. Ravan posed as a sadhu begging for food while beating a small drum, and forcibly kidnapped Ramas wife Sita. Though so powerful and mighty, Ravan eventually wailed when in a battle with Rama he lost all his kingdom and kinship.
Suffering and sorrow come even to the invincible kings and mighty warriors. The amount of suffering is proportionate. The root cause of our suffering is our own wrongdoing.
Etymology: Blend of dah (ten) sir (head), hence ten-headed, an epithet used for Ravan, the king of Sri Lanka. He is described as having ten heads and twenty arms in Ramayana.
