Op/Ed: Is Congress Really Interested to Punish Sacrilege Culprits and the Killer Cops?

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The willful negligence depicted by the Congress led Punjab government towards punishing the sacrilege culprits and the killer cops of firing incidents has started unveiling the real face of Congress. A few days after playing an emotional drama on sacrilege issue in the Punjab assembly, the Captain Amarinder Singh led Punjab government has started depicting its true colors.

A sharp wrath among Sikh community has started erupting against the Punjab government as it didn’t take any action against the killer Police cops despite indicting them under murder charges near about a month ago. Taking advantage of this delay by the Punjab government, three guilty police cops headed by the former SSP Charanjit Sharma approached the Punjab & Haryana High Court and succeeded in securing themselves from being arrested under murder charges.

It is pertinent to note here recalled here that the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission had recommended registration of criminal cases under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and section 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code against the Police cops responsible for opening an unprovoked firing on peacefully protesting Sikhs at Behbal Klan in which two innocent Sikh youths had attained martyrdom.  Justice Ranjit Singh had stated in its report that the cops acted without warning and permission.

Similarly, the trio sacrilege culprits namely Mohinder Pal Bittu, Shakti “Singh” and Sukhjinder “Singh” alias Sunny, guilty of stealing the holy corpus and then scattering the sacred ‘Angs’ at Bargari, have also succeeded in getting bail due to no objection by the CBI.

Although, the Congress minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa has tried to save Congress in this concern by terming the CBI as a biased agency, but he fails to explain the Punjab government’s inaction to present its side in the High Court during the hearing on petition moved by the killer cops against the investigation report of Justice Ranjit Singh.

At the end, the willful negligence of the Congress led Punjab government has given an impression that it holds no interest to punish the sacrilege culprits and the police cops responsible for opening gunfire on Sikhs in Kotkapura and Behbal Klan. It seems like the Congress was only interested in using this extremely emotive sacrilege issue only to build anti-SAD wave in Punjab ahead of Panchayati elections.
