SSP Charanjit Sharma Challenges Justice Ranjit Singh’s Report; High Court to Hear Petition Today

CHANDIGARH—Two weeks after the presentation of Justice Ranjit Singh’s investigation report in the Punjab assembly, the former Moga SSP Charanjit Sharma along with two other Police cops moved a petition against Justice Ranjit Singh’s investigation report. Notably, SSP Charanjit Sharma was immediately suspended after Kotkapura and Behbal Klan firing incidents in 2015.

Charanjit Sharma has claimed in the petition that the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission violated the provisions of the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952. He has accused the Commission of going against the evidences on record while making recommendations for their indictment.

The petition has been placed before the Bench of Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain of the High Court and will come up for a preliminary hearing today.

It may be recalled here that the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission had recommended registration of criminal cases sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and section 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code  against the Police cops responsible for opening an unprovoked firing on peacefully protesting Sikhs at Behbal Klan in which two innocent Sikh youths had attained martyrdom.  Justice Ranjit Singh had stated in its report that the cops acted without warning and permission.

Last month, the Faridkot police had inducted the names of four police officers in the FIR registered on October 21, 2015 against unknown police cops for opening an unprovoked firing on the peacefully protesting Sikhs at Behbal Klan.

Names of the four Police cops, who were inducted in the FIR are as follow:

  1. PPS officer Charanjit Sharma (the then SSP of Moga Police District and now retired)
  2. PPS officer Bikramjit Singh (the then SP (Detective) of Fazilka)
  3. Senior Inspector Amarjit Singh
  4. Inspector Pardip Singh
