One who meditates on the One Lord in mind (thought), word and deed – that person receives all the fruits or rewards. -Guru Arjun Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 760
Message: Most of us believe that reading the Scripture brings about merit or that it is a good deed. Guru Arjun Sahib tells us that mere reading is not sufficient. Whatever we read must be retained in the mind and acted upon in life. We cant progress spiritually if we do not practise what we learn.
It is not enough to read spiritual teaching and feel that we have made a breakthrough. After a day or two, we will forget what we have learnt and slip back into our old habits. Spiritual training takes time. We need to read and internalise the teachings and live them till they get properly rooted in our lives. If the teaching is about overcoming our evil tendencies like lust and excessive desires, then we have to watch over ourselves so that we do not do any bad deeds. Only by doing so can we attain all the desired fruits and rewards in life.
Etymology: Combination of sarab (all) + phalaa (fruits or rewards) modified from Sanskritphal(fruit) ? Pali ? Prakrit ? Punjabi and others.
