Gurbani Word Of The Day: baap

ਬਾਪ (baap)

Meaning: noun: Father.

Quote:

kaahe poot jhagrat hau saňg baap.
jin ke jane baḍeere tum hau   tin siu jhagrat paap.
O son! Why do you quarrel with your father? To quarrel with those who gave birth and raised you is a sin, a wrong thing. -Guru Ram Das Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 1200

Message: The verse above is from a hymn which is believed to be uttered by Guru Ram Das, apparently addressing his eldest son, Prithi Chand. Prithi Chand was an arrogant and greedy person. He had rows with his father, when his father appointed his youngest son, Arjun, instead of him as his successor.

We should never quarrel with or disrespect the one who gave birth to us. We might not be roaming this earth, nor enjoying our successes and reveling in the pleasures this universe has to offer, if our parents had not nurtured and educated us well. Our father is the very source of our existence. We must always be grateful and respectful to him who created us and who provides for us.

In the same vein, we must always cherish the fact that the Guru is our father, and we need to appreciate that he is the giver and taker, as he sees fit.

Etymology: From Sanskrit baapp (father) → Prakrit bapp  (father, grandfather) → Lahndi baapoo (grandfather), Punjabi baap, baapu (father).
