Gurbani Word Of The Day: baabul

ਬਾਬੁਲ (baabul)

Meaning: noun: Father, daddy.

Quote:

baabul kai ghar beṭaṛee   baalee baalai nehi.
While in the home of her father, a daughter is imbued with the love for dolls and toys. -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 935

Message: The feeling a daughter has in her father’s home is one of security, unconditional love, unwavering pride and faith. It is her familiar space and the root of her existence. Therefore, the bond between a father and daughter is rooted in a love which ensures the greatest protection. This enables the daughter to engage in a carefree life.

How lucky are we to have the privilege of a father who enables us to live in a carefree manner as he provides us comfort and security. In the same manner that we have the bond with our fathers, we must not neglect the bond we have with our Guru, who also has our own interests at heart, in good and bad times.

To a father growing old nothing is dearer than a daughter. Euripides, an ancient Greek tragedian, 481-407 BC

Note: The use of the home (family) of a father and his daughter in the above quote is also an analogy for the world and the body, respectively. While living in the world, a human being loves to enjoy the transitory worldly pleasures.

Etymology: Probably a poetic modification of the following:
Sanskrit baapp (father) → Prakrit bapp (father, grandfather) → Lahndi baapoo (grandfather), Punjabi baap, baapu (father).
Or
Sanskrit baabb (father) → Dumaki bab (father, father’s brother) → Kashmiri baab (father, grandfather)  Kumayuni/Nepali baabu, Hindi/Gujarati/Marathi baaboo (father and a term of respect), Bengali baabaa, Punjabi baabbaa (father).
