Gurbani Word Of The Day: maňnaṇ

ਮੰਨਣੁ (maňnaṇ)

Meaning: noun: To believe, to place one’s faith in, to accept, to follow.

Quote:
ਤੁਧਨੋ ਨਿਵਣੁ   ਮੰਨਣੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ॥
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੰਨ ਲੈਣਾ ਹੀ (ਸਹੀ ਅਰਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਤੇਰੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਨਿਵਣਾ ਹੈ।

tudhno nivaṇ   maňnaṇ teraa naau.
(O Divine!) To accept or place one’s faith in Your Naam is true bowing before You. -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 878

Message: Visiting a place of congregation, paying obeisance to the Guru and attending the congregation are all basic steps that Sikhs (seekers) are encouraged to take. However, they are not sufficient if the message is not faithfully accepted and practised.

In Gurbani, the highest ideal for a human being is to practically link oneself with the Divine or Naam. That is, having a consistent loving memory and internalisation of Divine attributes in our daily life. Only a prayer and spiritual offering consisting of love, truth, contentment and humility can help us to appreciate Divine grace and love.

ਸੀਸਿ ਨਿਵਾਇਐ ਕਿਆ ਥੀਐ   ਜਾ ਰਿਦੈ ਕੁਸੁਧੇ ਜਾਹਿ॥
What can be achieved by bowing the head when the heart is impure? -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 470

Etymology: From maňni (to believe, to revere, to obey, to approve, to accept) from Sanskrit maanayati (esteems, honours) → Pali maaneti → Prakrit maaṇei/maaṇai (honours) → Kashmiri maanun (to respect, agree to).
