Death Row Convict Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana Ends Hunger Strike

PATIALA—As per latest updates, the death row convict Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana today ended his hunger strike by drinking juice from her foster sister Bibi Kamaldeep Kaur Rajoana. Notably, Bhai Rajoana had started the hunger strike in the central jail of Patiala on July 16 in protest of inordinate delay in his death penalty.

It is unclear that under what circumstances Bhai Rajoana has ended his hunger strike, but it is being speculated that he has come under the influence of high promises by the Akali leaders.

Bhai Rajoana’s move has come after a day of meeting between Shiromani Akali Dal leaders and the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh seeking commutation of his death penalty to life imprisonment. After the meeting, the SAD leaders had claimed that the Union Home Minister had promised them of commuting the death sentence of Bhai Rajoana.

Sharing the development with media, Bhai Rajoana’s foster sister Bibi Kamaldeep Kaur said that the weight of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana reduced 5 Kg during the days of hunger strike.

It may be recalled here that the SGPC had moved a mercy petition (without the consent of Bhai Rajoana) before the President of India in March-2012 following which the Indian President had stayed his execution on March 28, 2012 i.e. just two days before the scheduled date of his execution.
