SGPC Welcomes Meghalaya High Court’s Verdict Giving Temporary Relief to Shillong Sikhs

NEW DELHI—The apex Sikh body Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhik Committee has warmly welcomed the Meghalaya High Court’s move of staying relocation of Sikhs from the Punjab lane area of Shillong. Notably, the Meghalaya High Court had stayed the relocation of Sikhs from the Punjab lane area of Shillong on July 10.

The Meghalaya High Court had made it clear that the High Level Committee (HLC) constituted by the Meghalaya’s state government doesn’t possess any right to relocate Sikhs and its jurisdiction is only limited unto tendering suggestion to the Meghalaya state government.

In a press note shared with Sikh24, the SGPC president S. Gobind Singh Longowal has accused the Meghalaya state government of intentionally singling out the Sikh residents despite the fact that the Sikhs have been living there since long time. He has appealed the Meghalaya state government to quit its obdurate behavior and renew the lease on the names of Sikhs living in the Punjabi lane area.
