If the hand, foot, and body, etc. get dirty, their dirt is removed by washing with water. -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 04
Message: We get rid of bodily dirt by washing it away with water. Washing with soap can also cleanse a soiled garment, dirty plates or surroundings. In short, it is easy to cleanse any physical object. The question then arises: How do we cleanse a mind overcrowded by unhelpful thoughts and dirtied by wrongdoings?
The answer lies in Gurbani. It reiterates that physical cleaning, while appropriate for the body and clothes, will not remove the stain of our negativity or wrongdoings. The wrongful thoughts that our mind conjures and the negative actions we have embarked upon cannot just be erased with soap or a detergent.
Love for the Naam the Divine virtues and wisdom is the only solvent that will remove these stains.
Note: The synonym of tan, deh is used to rhyme with kheh in the quote above.
