O Baba! (Apart from spiritual absorption, all) other forms of sleep that lead to bodily suffering and vices entering the mind are destroyers of happiness. -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 17

Message: Sleeping with eyes opened?
The wise ones like Guru Nanak are always engrossed with thoughts and feelings of the Creator in all their waking and restful hours.

Why do we sleep? We feel fresh and energized after a good sleep as the body and the poor thinking mind finally gets a rest. However, the question remains: In our waking hours, how often are we awake to truth and honest actions?

If we constantly allow our mind to be in a sleepy state of irresponsibility, wasteful egoism and attachment, then we are wastefully asleep. But if we are connected most times to virtues of the Creator, then we are truly awake to living a virtuous life.

Etymology: From Sanskrit svapan (sleepy, sleeping, numbness) → Punjabi sauṇ (sleeping).
