Jathedars Hawara’s mistreatment in Jail: SFJ lodges complaint at Geneva based UN office

GENEVA, Switzerland—A delegation of North American and European Sikh activists on January 16 lodged a complaint against the Indian government before the Geneva based United Nation officials in Switzerland for giving mistreatment to Jathedar Jagtar Singh Hawara in the Tihar jail of Delhi. The UN officials were also apprised of inhumane acts of Indian government of depriving Jathedar Hawara from medical treatment.

Gurpatwant Singh Pannu, the legal Advisor of Sikhs for Justice, acquainted the UN’s Special Reporter on Torture Mr. Nils Melzer in written about violation of human rights being committed by the Indian state. Mr. Melzer was specially apprised with the denial of medical treatment to political Sikh prisoner Jathedar Jagtar Singh Hawara by the Indian state.

Speaking to Sikh24, the delegation members informed that the UN officials informed them that they have received many complaints about denial of medical treatment to Jathedar Jagtar Singh Hawara by the Indian government. They further informed that their complaint is based on Jathedar Hawara’s medical examination conducted at AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) in 2015. “We have requested the UN officials to take suitable initiatives to facilitate proper medical treatment to Jathedar Jagtar Singh Hawara in Tihar jail,” they added.

S. Avtar Singh Pannu, S. Jasbir Singh Delhi, S. Rana Singh, S. Joga Singh UK, S. Dupinderjit Singh UK, S. Jatinder Singh Sandhu and S. Shalinder Singh Shinda were part of this delegation.
