AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Former SGPC executive team led by President Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar has been issued legal notice by a Sikh lawyer named Lakhbir Singh Sehmi for nominating two non-practicing Sikh lawyers as members of the Sikh Gurdwara Judicial Commission.

Along with Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar, former SGPC Chief Secretary Harcharan Singh has been also issued notice in this concern.

Sharing the development with Sikh24 on December 24, Amritsar based Advocate Lakhbir Singh Sehmi informed that the former SGPC executives led by Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar had sent names of 7 Sikh lawyers to the state government of Punjab for nomination in Sikh Gurdwara Judicial Commission.

“The SGPC had sent names of apostate lawyers and two of them were nominated in Sikh Gurdwara Judicial Commission by the Punjab Government,” he said.

“If these SGPC members don’t lodge answer to the legal notice then I shall sue them in court,” he added.

As per the Sikh Gurdwara Act, only practicing Sikhs can be nominated to the Sikh Gurdwara Judicial Commission.  During the tenure of the previous SGPC executive committee, a lot of new posts came into existence, which were filled by non-practicing Sikhs.

Sehmi told Sikh24 that one of the nominated members of the panel had a trimmed beard, while another had dyed it.  “This is against the norms established by the Sikh Rehit Maryada,” he said.

It is also being alleged that both of these members had close relationship with the Akali Dal.
