O mind! O foolish mind!! You do not remember the Divine. (Beware) by forgetting the Divine, all your qualities are withering away in vain. -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 12

Message: The quote above is directed at the foolish mind, one that does not remember its creator. Through this forgetfulness, the qualities inherent in the mind are also lost.

Explanation: Although to some the Divine gives His grace and others remain separated from Him (according to His will), He has given us all a discerning mind.

The hymn, from which this quote comes, uses the metaphor of a pool to describe the world. It warns the mind not to be foolish, not to drown in this pool of fiery worldly temptations and materialistic desires. It cautions the mind not to get stuck in a swamp of attachment as there is the danger of drowning in it too.

The ignorance of its divine source, results in the positive virtues from this source being wasted, slowly withering away unnoticed. Unaware, the mind does not follow any truth or wisdom.

By being in the company of the spiritually conscious, we can be reminded of the Divine presence in us and its related virtues.

Etymology: From Sanskrit vismarati (forgets) ? Pali vissarati ? Prakrit vissarai ? Punjabi vissar?aa/bissarnaa(to be forgotten).
