Gurbani Word Of The Day: dukh

ਦੁਖੁ (dukh)

Meaning: noun: Suffering, pain, grief.

Quote:

jo nar dukh mai dukh nahee maanai.
sukh sneh ar bh-ai nahee jaa kai   kaňchan maaṭee maanai.
The person, who in the midst of suffering, is not perturbed by suffering; who has no attachment to pleasure, no fears, and who knows gold (to be trivial like) dust (has the presence of the Divine within his or her heart). -Guru Teg Bahadar, Guru Granth Sahib, 633

Message: When there is absolute trust in the Divine presence in us, we are comforted and in some manner, cushioned from the harsh reality of life. We are then not affected by suffering.

Guru Teg Bahadar appeared not to be affected by the pain and suffering he had to endure in life and at the time of his death. Being spiritually conscious, he saw no difference in the opposites of pleasure and pain, gain or loss, success or failure.

He had full knowledge of the consequences of his decision to help the Hindus. Being spiritually grounded he accepted the pain and suffering that would come his way.

He simply surrendered to the will of the Master and bore the consequences of his decision. Blessed with divine grace, he heroically went to his death.

Our human weaknesses are many. The first would be egoism and attachment to this impermanent world. Pride in who we are, and our list of many successes, lead us away from a spiritual grounding.

As a result comes the assault of the emotions related to pain, pleasure, slander, praise, honour, dishonour, joy, sorrow, greed, desire, anger, judgment and the list goes on.

It is only when we are able to control and accept our emotions that we gain spiritual awareness.

Etymology: From Sanskrit duhkh (difficulty, pain) → Pali and Prakrit dukkh (misery) → Kashmiri dokh (sorrow, pain) → Sindhi ḍukhu → Lahndi dukh → Punjabi dukkh/dukh.
