The human being came into this world to earn a profit. But deceived by the thug (the Maya) one becomes a labourer (in the spiritual sense). -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 931

Message: We all want to be kings in life but many of us end up being mazdoors or labourers.

But we are not labourers, you may say. Those of us who have not found the true wealth, which brings a joyful state of deep serenity, are labourers even if we have abundant material wealth.

We look outside for pleasure, love, security, fulfilment and validation while we have a treasure-trove within, which contains much more than the world can offer us. Why does this happen?

We allow ourselves to become slaves of worldly temptations. We are blinded and deceived by the sparkling beauty of worldly riches. Greed, avarice, arrogance, slander and gossip prevail upon us.

In the midst of all this, we miss out on honest hard work and spiritual enrichment. In this way, instead of making a profit, we end up losing the capital too.

Let us recognise the deceiver or thug. Instead of chasing after the cheat, let us approach the true King. Only by seeking His sanctuary and realising true purpose in life and rekindling the divine potential within us, will we be able to attain true bliss.

A full belly to the labourer is, in my opinion, the foundation of public morals and the only source of real public peace. -William Cobbett, journalist, pamphleteer, and farmer, 1763-1835

Etymology: Modification of Arabic/Persian mazdoor.
Comparable to Urdu mazoor (handicap, cripple), hence also one deprived of resources or financially crippled.
