Congress leader Sunil Jakhar Sweeps Gurdaspur by-poll With Margin of 193,219 votes

GURDASPUR, Punjab—President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee Sunil Jakhar today won the by-poll for Gurdaspur parliamentary seat by a noticeable margin of 193,219 votes. Notably, the Gurdaspur parliamentary seat had gone vacant after death of BJP affiliated Vinod Khanna due to cancer in April this year.

Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar secured 4,99,752 votes while BJP candidate Swaran Salaria secured 3,06,752 votes. AAP candidate Suresh Khajuria, who is a retired Major General, could secure only 23,579 votes.

The Gurdaspur Parliamentary seat has nine Assembly segments namely Bhoa, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Dinanagar, Qadian, Fathegarh Churian, Dera Baba Nanak, Sujanpur and Batala.

Though the election began in form of a triangular fight between Jakhar, Swarn Salaria of SAD-BJP and AAP’s Major General (Retd.) Suresh Khajuria but still the Congress succeeded in gaining ground by putting up a united face. SAD-BJP suffered a big setback when its key leader Sucha Singh Langah was booked in a rape case. Similarly, election campaign of AAP also failed to gather steam this time.

Interacting with media after winning the by-election, Sunil Jakhar said that even the BJP’s traditional vote bank did not vote for the party in this election. He added that Modi government’s economic policies were destroying the country and the masses have become aware of it.
