Senior Akali Leader Charged With Rape

Sucha Langah

GURDASPUR, Punjab—In a major blow to Badal’s Shiromani Akali Dal party, senior Akali leader and former Cabinet Minister Sucha Langaah was booked under charges of rape, at the complaint of a resident of village Sohal. Police have registered an FIR under sections 376, 384, 420, 506 of the Indian Penal Code, after conducting a medical test of the victim.

According to reports, the woman came in contact with Langah after the death of her husband in 2008, who was in the police. The woman faced difficulties in securing a job in the absence of her husband, so she contacted Langah. Langah started physically abusing her and began calling her to various locations where he used to rape her.

The 39 year old complainant has claimed in the FIR that she used to study in the same class as Langah’s daughter, Sarabjit Kaur, at the Bebe Nanki College in Gurdaspur. She has accused the 61-year-old politician of forcing her to have sexual relations with him for over eight years under the threat of death.

Media reports also reveal that Sucha Langah faked a loan of 8 lakhs Rupees from Cooperative Bank under her name, but gave only one lakh to her.

The victim has also handed over a pen drive containing a video clip of her sexual intercourse with Langah. This video clip was shot by the victim using a hidden camera in May this year.

Sucha Langah, has labeled the allegations against him as a classic case of political vendetta that has been launched to hurt SAD’s prospects in the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha by-poll. However, he decided to quit party positions to allow the law to take it’s course. SAD President, Sukhbir Badal has accepted his resignation.
