ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ (mitr)
Meaning: noun: Friend.
Quote:
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਜਾ ਤੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਹੈ ਤਾ ਕਿਆ ਮੈ ਕਾੜਾ ॥
hari jeeu jaa too meraa mitr hai taa kiaa mai kaaṛaa
– O loving Divine! When You are my friend, then what do I need to fret or worry about?
– Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 1197
Likewise, when we see the Divine as a friend, it takes away all formalities and we can open our heart out to the Good Friend. The presence and wisdom of the Almighty Friend helps us to overcome our flaws, fears and worries. It keeps us steady through the ups and downs of life. We are better equipped to enjoy life’s blessings and fulfill our healthy desires.
When we realise the Almighty Companion dwelling near at hand, what sorrow can afflict us? When we have the blessing of the Divine Friend, we have no need to worry.
Etymology: From Sanskrit mitr (friend; the sun god – Rig Veda). Comparable to English Mithra/Mithras (the sun god – the friend of man, in the ancient Persian religion).
