Controversial Sarna Brother Takes Charge of Patna Sahib Management

PATNA, Bihar—Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi) General Secretary and former Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) President Harvinder Singh Sarna was elected as Takht Sri Patna Sahib Management Committee president.  His appointment was announced on September 3.  Previously, former SGPC President Avtar Makkar was the President of the committee.

Eleven out of total 15 members of Takht Sri Patna Sahib Management Committee were present in the meeting in which 10 were Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi) affiliated and 1 was Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) affiliated. The former President R.S. Gandhi proposed Harvinder Sarna’s name which was endorsed by former General Secretary Charanjit Singh. In absence of proposal of any other name, Sarna was endorsed by the all the present members.

Sarna thanked all the members and Jathedar Iqbal Singh for depicting confidence in him.

SAD (Badal) affiliated Shalinder Singh (Tata Nagar) has been elected as Senior Vice President while Bibi Kamaljit Kaur was elected as Junior Vice-President. Similarly, Charanjit Singh was elected as General Secretary and Mohinder Singh Chhabra as Secretary.

Former President R.S. Gandhi, R.S. Ajit, Maharaj Singh Sonu, former General Secretary Sarjinder Singh and Bhajan Singh have been taken into the Management Committee’s executive panel.

Former President of Takht Sri Patna Sahib Management Committee Avtar Makkar and other two members namely Gurinderpal Singh & Dr. Gurmeet Singh Kanpur remained absent in the meeting.

Background

Aside from several cases of corruption during his tenure at the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, Harvinder Sarna in 2010 led parkash of Guru Granth Sahib at Nij Thao Mandir.  His act was condemned by Delhi based Sikhs and he was reported to the Akal Takht Sahib, however, due to political pressure, no action was taken by the then President Giani Gurbachan Singh.
