AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Even though Bhai Dilawar Singh Babbar sacrificed his life 32 years ago, he still is remembered by the Sikh Panth for his seva.  His martyrdom anniversary was observed with fervor at the supreme Sikh throne Sri Akal Takht Sahib on August 31.

Bhai Dilawar Singh had sacrificed himself to put control over the massacre of Sikh youth by Beant “Singh” led Congress government in Punjab in the early 1990ss. Beant was chief minister of Punjab during the early 1990s where Sikhs were murdered in large numbers in extra-judicial murders.

On this eve, a message by Akal Takht Jathedar Jagtar Singh Hawara (appointed by Sarbat Khalsa 2015) was read out by Bhai Gurcharan Singh Patiala.

Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara appreciated Shaheed Bhai Dilawar Singh Babbar’s sacrifice for the Panth.  He asked Sikh youth to remember these sacrifices and life their lives as per tenants of the Sikh Gurus.

Expressing concern over the rising apostasy, drug menace and attacks on Sikh scriptures in Punjab, Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara has appealed the entire Sikh community to unite on a common platform to fight against these evils. Notably, Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara is being confined in the Tihar Jail of Delhi.

An Akhand Path Sahib, which was laid on August 29, was culminated amid presence of prominent Sikh activists of various pro-freedom Sikh activists.  Various ragi jathas from Sri Harmandir Sahib sung Gurbani verses and Head Granthi of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Malkit Singh read the sacred Hukamnama (order of the Almighty Lord) on this occasion.

Unlike the previous years, the SGPC officials kept distance from the martyrdom anniversary and the family members of Shaheed Bhai Dilawar Singh were honored by Giani Malkit Singh.  Akal Takht Sahib has bestowed the title of ‘mahan shaheed’ (great martyr) on Bhai Dilawar Singh 6 years ago, however, the SGPC appointed jathedar and the parallel jathedars did not attend the anniversary program.

Activists from Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), Akhand Kirtani Jatha, Akal Khalsa Dal, Dal Khalsa and others were present at the program.
