NEW DELHI, India—The constitution of a two member Supervisory Committee by the Supreme Court of India, was met with satisfaction by petitioner S. Gurlad Singh Kahlon, who said that the constitution has once again lit the hope of justice in victims of 1984 Sikh Genocide. He has said that it was the first time in history that the Supreme Court of India has appointed a supervisory committee for investigating 1984 Sikh genocide cases.
The Supreme Court of India appointed a two member supervisory committee to scrutinize 241 cases related to the 1984’s Sikh genocide, after it was revealed that the Special investigation team (SIT) has closed this staggering amount. The committee would be comprised of two former Supreme Court judges and given three months to conclude their report.
Former DSGMC member Kahlon had moved a petition before the Supreme Court of India in January 2016, appealing that the SC ought to appoint a supervisory committee to supervise the SIT’s probe into Sikh genocide cases. The petitioner had also asked the apex Indian Court to organize special courts for those cases in which the probing agency had filed a charge sheet against the culprits.
