TARN TARAN, Punjab—25th martyrdom anniversary of Sikh freedom fighter Bhai Sukhdev Singh Babbar was observed with fervour at his native village Dasuwal in District Tarn Taran on August 13. The program witnessed large turnout of the Sikh Sangat from all over Punjab, as well as prominent Sikh personalities from across the globe.
Following the culmination of Sri Akhand Path Sahib, the Raagi Singhs recited ‘bir-russ’ Gurbani verses. Renowned Dhadi Jatha of Bhai Tarsem Singh Moranwali addressed the life tales of Shaheed Bhai Sukhdev Singh Babbar to the Sikh sangat.
Bibi Gurmeet Kaur (wife of Bhai Sukhdev Singh’s brother Bhai Mehal Singh) and her daughter were honoured by the organizers on this eve.
The program was unique in sense that it brought Sikh leaders from various factions together on one stage.
Sarbat Khalsa appointed Akal Takht Jathedar Bhai Dhian Singh Mand, former Akal Takht Sahib Punj Piare, Bhai Bhupinder Singh Bhalwan (Akhand Kirtani Jatha, Germany), Principal Baljinder Singh, AISSF President Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad, Sarabjit Singh Ghuman (Dal Khalsa), President of United Akali Dal Bhai Mohkam Singh, Bhai Satnam Singh Manawa (UAD), Jathedar Baldev Singh Sirsa, Former Khemkaran MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha, S. Jarnail Singh Sakhira, Dr. Gurjinder Singh, S. Bhupinder Singh Sarpanch, Bhai Surinder Singh Talibpura (Akal Khalsa Dal) were prominent among the present attendees.
Shaheed Bhai Sukhdev Singh Babbar was martyred in a staged encounter on August 9, 1992 when heavily armed policemen had made him surrender after storming into his residence at the crowded city of Patiala. It is a widespread belief that police ‘cat’ (informer and killer) Gurmeet Pinky, shot him at point blank range, after his capture, to secure the reward of one million rupees, placed on his head by the Indian government. Later, the Police had claimed to have killed Shaheed Bhai Sukhdev Singh Babbar in an armed encounter but three successive changed versions of Punjab police about the martyrdom of Bhai Sukhdev Singh Babbar had ultimately unearthed the reality of his fake encounter.
