There are many, numerous, who claim (to be enlightened) and are called so, but such a humble servant who knows the mystery of the spiritual union with the Divine is very rare. -Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 1302

Message: True Humble Servant

Eventually Prithi Chand began composing his own hymns and attributing some to Guru Nanak, and attracted a following by calling himself the guru.

The heretic sect begun by Prithi Chand enjoyed the support of the Mughal court, but it has always been boycotted by Sikhs. It is known as theMinas, or dissembling scoundrels.

In the context of the verse above, betta or vetta (knower) refers to one who has attained the spiritual knowledge necessary for self-realization and enlightenment.

Such a person sees only the Divine, pervading and permeating everywhere and in everyone. He or she has no ill will towards anyone. So, no one seems evil to them. All are good to them.

They are always victorious as they never try to compete with everyone.

They never overly indulge in anything, so they have no need to give up anything.

They have neither fear of pain nor any desire for pleasure. They are always at peace.

The moment your mind truly awakens, you will realize all is divine and you will see how beautiful it all is. -Anonymous

Etymology: From Sanskrit vettaa (knower, one who has deeper or higher spiritual knowledge).

Summary of the Week:
This weeks verses pose a question: how can a person stay calm and mentally strong in the midst of so much oppression and uncertainty, even when their ability to control their own destiny is threatened?

Is it humanly possible to live by this concept of accepting stoically and with grace whatever life throws at us?

Our Gurus and many of the Sikhs are moral heroes who showed us that evil and oppression cannot extinguish us. Adversity can always be faced with the courage and strength by a positive spirit.

Through these verses, Guru Arjan Sahib showed us it can be done.

If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present. -Lao Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher,6th century BC
