BREAKING: First Turban Wearing Sikh Elected as MP in Slough

SLOUGH, UK—Former Gravesham mayor Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi has made history by being elected as the first turban wearing Sikh in the UK Parliament.  Dhesi of the Labour Party defeated Mark Vivis of the Conservative party by a big margin of 17,000 votes.

Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi was first elected to Gravesham Borough Council from the Northfleet North ward in 2007. During his first term, he served as shadow cabinet member in the opposition.  He was also the Labour candidate from the Gravesham parliamentary constituency but lost in the last general elections across UK.

Dhesi was born in Slough, a borough of London, and completed his primary schooling in Jalandhar, Punjab.  He later moved to Gravesend, UK, and studied at the Oxford and Cambriage University.

His father Jaspal Singh Dhesi, who now runs a construction company in UK, was the president of Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar, Gravesend.

Dhesi is the second Sikh to be elected in the UK elections.  Preet Gill is the first Sikh Woman MP to be elected ever.

New Labour MP Preet Kaur Gill retained the party’s seat of Birmingham Edgbaston, becoming the UK’s first female Sikh MP. The 44-year-old, who got a majority of 6,917, said her passion for politics was inspired by her late father and his close friend Lord King, who became the first Sikh peer in the UK.
The seat of Birmingham Edgbaston has been continuously represented by women from both main parties since 1953.
