Humility is my mace and, to be the dust (humblest) of all is my double-edged sword. -Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 628

Message: True warrior is one who

The Divine has His own ways of punishing those who bully gentle and virtuous souls.

Prithi Chand conspired with a Mogul official, Sulhi Khan, to raid Amritsar and harm Guru Arjan Sahib.

However, through the will of the Divine, Sulhi Khan fell into a burning brick kiln and was burnt to ashes.

We understand that weapons are used for self-defence or attack. The verse above tells us about the weapons that Guru Arjan wore in his life: the mace of humility and the sword of modesty.

By inculcating the qualities of humility and modesty and keeping right company, we will transcend our self-centredness and see the presence of the Divine in everyone. Thus we would be able to overcome any opposition lovingly.

These are the weapons that worked against all odds for the Guru. Wear them, and they will work for us too. There is no better protective armour than this.

The wisest man is he who does not fancy that he is so at all. -Nicolas Boileau-Despraux, poet and critic, 1636-1711

Etymology: From Arabic/Persian ghareebee from ghareeb (stranger, foreigner; poor).
