103rd Anniversary of Komagata Maru Incident

VANCOUVER, Canada—Today marks the 103rd anniversary of the day that the government of Canada refused 340 Sikhs, and a number of other nationalities, from entering their country, after they had sailed from India, on the Komagata Maru ship.

In a blot on Canada’s history, Justin Trudeau issued a formal apology for the incident, in parliament last year. Canada is now known as having one of the most welcoming immigrant policies, a remarkable contrast to the tragic event of 1914.

The incident saw the ship being forced back to India, and upon it’s arrival there, it’s passengers placed under arrest. Some 19 were killed as a riot ensued when the arrests were taking place.
