Harjit Singh Sajjan pays obeisance at Harmandir Sahib; Some Activists Barred by SGPC from Attending Function

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Canadian Defence Minister S. Harjit Singh Sajjan today paid obeisance at the sanctum sanctorum Sri Harmandir Sahib. He was warmly welcomed by the SGPC President Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar, General Secretary Amarjit Singh Chawla and other officials of SGPC.

Harjit Singh Sajjan was honoured with ‘Siropao’ (robe of honour) by the Head Granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib Giani Jagtar Singh on paying obeisance inside the sanctum sanctorum. Hazoori Ragi Bhai Rai Singh sung the beautiful Gurbani scripture ‘ਹਉ ਆਇਆ ਦੂਰਹੁ ਚਲਿ ਕੈ’ in melodious tone.

Later, S. Harjit Singh Sajjan paid obeisance at the Supreme Sikh throne Sri Akal Takht Sahib and gathered information about the historical importance of some other Sikh shrines. He wrote in the visitor book of central Sikh shrine that his success was blessing of Guru Sahib.

Organizing a special program inside the entrance plaza of Sri Harmandir Sahib, the SGPC officials honoured S. Harjit Singh Sajjan with a Siropao, a sword, a set of religious books and a specially made memento with an honouring note inscribed on it.

At the function, President Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar said that it was a matter of proud for Sikh community that Harjit Singh Sajjan is serving as a Defence Minister of Canada.  

Meanwhile, some activists were barred by the SGPC from attending Harjit Singh Sajjan’s honour program.  These included activists of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar).
