(Third trait of saintly persons): Being kind to all beings and eradicating the five vices from the mind. Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 1357

Message: Compassion and selfless service

This verse tells us about the behaviour and habits of saintly persons.

Spiritually awakened persons are aware that the Creator dwells in creation (the Divine is all-pervading). They are therefore always kind, compassionate and merciful to all.

In the realm of spirituality, vices or evil passions (such as, excessive lust, wrath, greed, worldly attachment and arrogance, etc.) are termed as our worst enemies

Restraining our senses and mind from these infatuations will make us devout or saintly in the real sense of the term. It will also help us to be more relaxed and spiritually at peace.

Etymology: From Sanskrit dayaalu (kind, compassionate).
