Duryodhan was ruined (by his own pride) and lost his honour.
He did not realise the Divine who alone is the creator of all. Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 224
Message: Forgetting the Creator leads to doom
The above verse refers to Duryodhan, a major character in the Hindu epic Mahabharat.
He was the eldest son of King Dhritarashtra and the leader of the Kauravas in the war of Mahabharat. He was very arrogant and proud of his power, wealth and material possessions.
As the story goes, once he went to the extent of trying to openly disrobe Draupadi, the wife of his cousin, Arjun. This and some other events led to the war of Mahabharat.
Ultimately, Duryodhan lost his kingdom and was killed in a duel.
When we become too proud of our possessions and power, we forget the one who created us and provides for us.
Too much pride in us leads to wrongdoings and cruelty on others. Then, we are bound to suffer and be punished.
Etymology: Blend of Sanskrit dur (difficult or unconquerable) + yodh/yodhan (fighting, warrior), hence literally one with whom fighting is difficult or an unconquerable warrior. (Read more: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duryodhana)
